In MySims, an extremely large majority of the items you'll find in your town are found by prospecting. Most places where you can prospect will be represented with a large crystal shard (it's official name is the Prospecting Crystal). You can't prospect wherever you want, you can only prospect in areas where the game will prompt you to be able to do so. Each and every area has different essences. You'll be able to prospect in caves, your actual town, the desert, your garden, and many other places.
