Fishing is one way to obtain essences in MySims and MySims Kingdom. Usually, you can fish regular organisms, but you may also find objects in the water, such as tires in MySims. You also need to fish in order to obtain some collectibles items in MySims Kingdom, for Barney's Quest, Fishy Proposition.
MySims
In MySims, you fish by holding on to the B button on your Wii remote while standing on short pier type thing over a lake/pond. You move your bobber around by waving the Wii remote. You'll see bubbles. Those are the fish. Move your bobber towards it. The fish will attempt to grab the bait. Pull the Wii remote up and you'll be able to get the fish out of the water.
Fish Found in Both Wii and PC

PC Exclusive Essences
Note that every Garden each player has in their game has different essences, so you may not find some of these essences in your Garden and must trade with other players to collect them all. Location varies.

MySims Kingdom
Fishing in MySims Kingdom is similar to MySims. However, instead of using motion controls for moving the bobber, you use the analog stick on your Nunchuk to move the bobber around. Move it around bubbles (like in MySims). Unlike in MySims, you don't use the B button to do anything besides exiting. Just like in MySims, you fish the fish out by pulling up your Wii remote.
Fish
Fish are a collectable object which Barney Cull asks you to collect. Every time you give him a new type of fish he will tell you a bit about it and then give you a reward
